If you want to learn how to raise a calf, play this game. It is super fun.
We have been waiting to go and play it.
When you go on you play the game by choosing your own calf and naming it.
When you have a calf you can care for it by feeding it and grooming.

Have you seen a real calf before?

Today we skpyed our class mate Erin. She is in America with her family. She is visiting lots of people and places.

She skyped us at 10 in the morning our time but for her it was 5pm the day before. It was very funny.
We asked her a lot of questions and we enjoyed hearing all about her trip so far.
She is off to Missouri next to see some of her family.

Nature trail

Room 12 sketched the nature trail in the beautiful shade of the old trees. We saw fantail birds ducking and diving between us while we stood still to sketch. We were zooming in on one tree to look at the detail of the bark.

In my tummy I felt excited to go down the stairs. I loved the leaves falling on me. It was ticklish. Some of the nature trail was dark. By Jessica

Room 12 has started a twitter class account.
We are using twitter as a class to tweet to other classes about educational topics. We would like to grow our blogging connections by sharing updates to our blog with our twitter friends. Today we are participating in a hash tag #kidsedchatnz to connect with other learners in New Zealand. We will be answering a number of questions through twitter.

Read the school newsletter if you would like more information.

At positive assembly Koru the Kiwi came to assembly. He came because we are learning to swim safe.  Koru did a really silly dance for us, he wiggled his bottom to us. He was dancing to a song about swimming.

We go to positive assembly every Friday. We go to sing, get certificates and we even have a special draw where we can get prizes if our name gets called out of the box. We also celebrate the success of our sports teams. We hear about their games and who received player of the day.

Te Tāonga- Our Gateway

The gateway welcomes people into our school. Our gateway is made up of stories. Mahehe is the left pillar, he is looking over the river to see who is coming.
Hotumane is the other pillar and he is holding a rope because it is believed that he threw himself over the river by bending back a tree.

The gateway has been at our school for a long time. Last year Mrs Blair, Whaea Robyn and some parents from school helped to paint our gateway.

The face in the middle of the gateway is named Koruru.

Does your school have something old that is special like our gateway?

Hi,

Welcome to our blog if this is the first time you have visited as a parent or student from Hamilton East School.

This is a photo of our team newsletter. The students took this letter home this week. With the letter we have asked parents to return a form about whether or not you are available to assist on our class trips. I look forward to seeing these back at school next week. There is a copy in the classroom for your reference.

I look forward to seeing you at the school picnic near the hall next Thursday the 14th of February.

Thanks,

Hineata Blair

Planting in our garden

A few days ago we planted some spinach from seed. We planted spring onion and basil too.
We got some soil and some pots, we planted some inside to see how fast they grow. We also put some in the garden to see if they grow better in our class or in the garden.
We have to water them everyday. They are growing so quickly already!

If you have a garden, what do you have growing in it?

Koha Table

  • Room 12 are making a table where we can trade vegetables.

  • If you are at our school, you could bring your extra vegetables or fruit from home and put them on the table by the waiting area after school.

  • If you see something you like, you are able to take it for your family.

We decided to create a space to share because we had too many veges and we couldn't eat them all.

Hatching Chickens

Today when we were walking back from swimming we walked past a very excited Room 13.
They were excited about their chicken hatching!

We had no idea of what it looked like until we saw a little baby hatching out of it's egg.
It was very wet and lonely, most people thought they would be born fluffy. It was the first egg to hatch.
When one egg hatches it tries to wake up the other eggs.
Room 13 was really excited to have chicks hatching in their class.

The eggs are in an incubator to keep them warm. The rest of the eggs will hatch soon. Mrs Jones named the first one Tahi. Do you know why she would have used that name?

What do you know about chickens?

Memorial and Parana parks

We visited Memorial park today.

We sketched the environment around us, we could choose between trees or a Spitfire XV1 replica plane from World War Two, or a cannon.

James touched the cannon, the cannon felt like metal so it was cold and hard. James could just reach a thing to pull and it felt smooth. We saw a man inside the plane but we think he is not real!
Robert could see a missile casing so we could see what the cannon used to fire.

We played at the playground, it has changed a lot. There were three pools. They moved the see saw closer and there were some neat eggs to sit in and swing around on.

Memorial and Parana Parks on PhotoPeach

We had lots of parent helpers which was great! Thank you parents.
